An Atwater man was arrested Tuesday after police said he ran from a car crash and tried to ditch a stolen firearm.
David Ramirez Coronado, 36, was booked at the Merced County jail without bail in connection with a half-dozen charges, including weapons and theft-related allegations.
Coronado was the passenger in a vehicle that crashed into a parked truck just after 4:30 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection of Juniper Avenue and Castle Street. The driver, whose name was not released, apparently tried to retrieve something from the floor of the car and crashed into a parked pickup, Atwater police said in a statement.
Coronado fled, running south at Van Terrace Drive, where witnesses told police he dropped a firearm on the street. Officers searched the area and found a loaded handgun in the 1700 block of Van Terrace, police said. Investigators learned the firearm had recently been reported stolen from a home in Merced, Lt. Samuel Joseph said.
Coronado returned to the crash scene a short time later and was arrested, police said.
