A 27-year-old Merced man was killed just north of Porterville on Saturday morning when he was ejected from his vehicle after it drifted off the road and overturned in an orchard.

The man was traveling south on Highway 65 just south of Avenue 184 when for an unknown reason he drifted toward the east side of the road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The man overcorrected, drove back over the southbound lanes and continued off the road and down an embankment to the west of the highway.

His 2004 Chevrolet struck a concrete sandpipe and several fruit trees before overturning, the CHP reported.

He was thrown from the car and later died. He was not wearing a seat belt, the CHP said.

Neither drugs nor alcohol appear to be a factor, the CHP said.

The man’s identification will not be released until his family is notified.
