One man was injured late Monday when he and another man were attacked by two people with pepper spray and a “large machete-type knife,” the Merced Police Department reported.
Fernando Moreno, 39, was hospitalized after he was slashed once with a knife about 10:30 p.m. on the patio of an apartment complex in the 1200 block of West First Street, police said Tuesday in a news release.
A second victim, 47-year-old Felipe Ramirez, was assaulted with pepper spray during the attack, police said.
Officers described the suspects as a “black male” with “a large build,” possibly in his 40s, and a “heavy-set black female.” Neither has been identified, Sgt. Alan Ward said in the release.
Moreno told the police he was on the patio when the suspects approached him and attacked. Moreno’s injury was to his “lower body” when the man slashed him with the knife. Ramirez said he was knocked to the ground during the scuffle, according to police, and the woman showered him with pepper spray when he tried to get up.
Both suspects fled on foot.
Investigators did not comment on any possible motives for the attack.
Moreno was taken to an area hospital by ambulance and Ramirez was treated at the scene.
