Bail remained set at $30,000 Wednesday for a 35-year-old Los Banos mother charged with kicking a teenager in the head last week during a fight between students on a high school campus.

Angelia Spafford has pleaded not guilty to helping her teenage daughter assault a 15-year-old girl at Pacheco High School on March 4, according to Merced Superior Court records and the Los Banos Police Department.

Spafford appeared briefly in court Wednesday before retired Judge Frank Dougherty for a bail-review hearing. It was not clear if there were any motions made to reduce Spafford’s bail, as she has not been assigned an attorney, but no changes were made to her bail Wednesday, according to court records.

Katie Gates, the deputy district attorney prosecuting the case, confirmed that no defense attorneys have appeared on Spafford’s behalf. It was unclear Wednesday if Spafford had refused the help of the Merced County Public Defender’s Office.

Spafford demanded a preliminary hearing be scheduled within the minimum time legally allowed. Dougherty ordered Spafford to return to court March 19 for that hearing, Gates confirmed.

The Merced County District Attorney’s Office charged Spafford with felony assault and misdemeanor resisting arrest in connection with the incident.

Police said the fight apparently stemmed from an ongoing dispute between the 15-year-old victim and Spafford’s 14-year-old daughter, who was also taken into custody but later released to relatives.

Spafford remained in custody late Wednesday at the John Latorraca Correctional Facility in Merced.
