The 57th Chowchilla Western Stampede kicked off Friday morning with the historic cattle drive down Robertson Boulevard in Chowchilla. At right, Steve Branco of Chowchilla, a member of the Stampede committee and a son of a founding member of the committee, still competes in roping events. Cowboys and cowgirls from all over competed in three days of roping events at the Chowchilla-Madera County Fairgrounds. The Stampede barrel races will be held Saturday beginning at noon. All events are free to the public.
