A 41-year-old man has been arrested as a suspect in the case of a woman who reported being sexually assaulted at a Seneca Street apartment.

John Campos was taken into custody early Tuesday at his residence in the 300 block of Seneca Street, which is not far from where the alleged assault happened.

The woman, who is in her early 20s, reported the sexual assault late Sunday, saying she had been carrying laundry back to her residence. She reported being approached, grabbed and sexually assaulted by the man, according to Sgt. Alan Ward.

The victim said the attacker was nude from the waist down.

Merced police Officer Ronald Luker investigated the assault and identified Campos as a suspect. Luker learned Campos had been previously suspected of loitering naked in the same area in August.

Luker also obtained surveillance video that showed Campos in the area at the time of the assault. The victim positively identified Campos as her attacker. He was taken into custody without incident.

In addition, police said Campos admitted to accosting the victim.

Campos was booked at the Merced County Jail on suspicion of indecent exposure and sexual battery.

Police are asking anyone with additional information about the case to call (209) 385-4702 or the department’s automated tip line at (209) 385-4725. Tips are kept confidential and callers can remain anonymous.
