PG&E Jeep hits Atwater police car

An Atwater officer was involved in a crash with a PG&E Jeep. The Jeep driver left the scene but was later found. Nobody was seriously hurt.

An Atwater officer is being treated for injuries sustained late last week when his police cruiser was hit by another vehicle, according to Atwater police.

Officer Matthew Haywood reported over the radio that his car was struck by a Pacific, Gas and Electric Co. vehicle about 7:12 p.m. Friday near Buhach and Ashby roads in Atwater, police said.

The officer then reported over the radio that the driver of a 2006 white Jeep Liberty with PG&E markings left the scene, driving slowly east on Ashby Road.

Police said other officers arrived at the scene of the accident and saw that Haywood’s cruiser had major damage to the rear passenger side.

Officers later found the Jeep on the south side of Ashby Road, about a mile from the crash scene, police said. The driver, Kenneth Lambert, 44, said he didn’t realize he had been in an accident, police said.

Lambert said he has suffered from seizures and takes medication, police said, but has not had a seizure for more than a year. Police said the crash was not considered a hit-and-run accident.

Lambert did not report any injuries and was not arrested. Haywood was taken to an Atwater clinic to get checked out. He was later released but is off duty while seeking additional treatment for his injuries.
