The Merced County Fair will host an e-waste recycling drive in conjunction with the city’s annual Spring Cleanup this weekend to help residents get rid of unwanted items.

The fairgrounds, located at 900 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, will open its recycling drop site on the 11th Street parking lot, near the G Street entrance. The event will run Saturday and Sunday from 6:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m, and again April 12 -13.

The fairgrounds recycling event will accept only the following electronic devices: televisions, computer monitors, LCD screens, plasma screens, laptops, computer towers, printers, copiers, fax machines, calculators, stereo systems, network equipment, keyboards, computer mice, VCRs, DVD players, speakers, cellphones and telephones.

Although the e-waste drive will only collect electronic devices and not home appliances, the city’s Spring Cleanup will recycle most appliances that are at least 50 percent metal. The Spring Cleanup will also open three additional drop-off locations at Merced High School (G Street parking lot), Merced College (Frontage Road at Lehigh Drive parking lot) and Golden Valley High School (Childs Avenue parking lot).

According to fair CEO Tom Musser, the items do not have to be in working condition and there is no limit on the amount of items that can be dropped off. He said the e-waste drive was coordinated with the city’s Spring Cleanup to make recycling easier for residents.

E-waste has become one of the most rapidly growing waste problems in the world, and events such as these can make the difference, according to Musser.

“It really does help clean up the city, which is absolutely great,” Musser said. “It helps prevent buildup and its encourages people to clean up and get rid of the stuff they no longer need.”
