A missing Mariposa man’s body was discovered in the rocks at the bottom of a popular climbing area located west of Yosemite Valley, the California Highway Patrol reported Sunday.
The 36-year-old man was first reported missing Friday evening, according to the CHP. The man’s family reported he might be suicidal and was headed to Yosemite.
After searching more than an hour with a CHP helicopter, the man was found about 1,000 feet from the top of the Rostrum climbing area, according to the CHP. The man’s vehicle was abandoned on Highway 41, near the Rostrum turnout.
Because of strong winds and the time it would take personnel to respond, the body was not recovered until Sunday morning, when his remains were taken to El Capitan Meadow and turned over to Yosemite personnel.
