The winners were announced Thursday for the UC Merced Bobcat Art Show, a showcase of art by students, staff and faculty at the university.
Gail Benedict, the exhibit’s organizer, said 51 artists each submitted a piece. Fifteen of those works are displayed in the art gallery, which is located in Room 106 of the Social Sciences and Management Building, while the remaining 36 works of art are displayed on the second floor of the Kolligian Library.
The winners of the competition were selected by Benedict, Professor ShiPu Wang and students in Wang’s Curatorial Methods and Practice class. There were six categories in the competition: painting, drawing, photography/digital media, mixed media and sculpture. The sixth category was the “audience award,” whereby the winner was determined by the entry that received the most “likes” on Facebook.
The first place winners included Bao Ling (painting), Lisa Kody (drawing), Mirella Gutierrez (photography/digital media), Nereyda Martinez (mixed-media), Juliane Marie Liberto (sculpture) and Manille Francisco (audience award).
“Most of the time this is the first time the person has exhibited any of their art or photos,” Benedict said. “So it’s a very scary experience to put your soul out there like that. So they are very brave for doing it, and it’s a very good experience for them. ”
All of the works of art can be view at Arts UC Merced Present’s Facebook page.
The art will remain on display until May 7. UC Merced is located at 5200 Lake Road.
