A 67-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence Tuesday after a two-vehicle crash on northbound Highway 99 near Atwater, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The incident was reported at 10:05 a.m. near the Franklin Road exit. The suspect, J. Carmen Rosas of Merced, was driving a 2000 Ford Ranger northbound on Highway 99 in the slow lane. Traffic ahead of Rosas had come to a stop, according to the CHP.
Rosas did not stop for traffic, the CHP said, and the front end of his vehicle crashed into the back of a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Herminio Alvarez, 44, of Merced. Both drivers were unhurt in the crash.
The Ford sustained moderate front-end damage, blocking the slow lane for about 35 minutes. Traffic was temporarily backed up on the highway to Mission Avenue, the CHP said.
CHP officers conducted an investigation and determined Rosas was intoxicated, officials said. He was then taken into custody.
