Merced College to award diplomas to 1,100 grads

Merced College will pass out more than 1,100 degrees at the culmination of the school year.
Many will walk the stage to get their diplomas during the 51st commencement ceremony, planned for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Merced College Stadium ’76, 3600 M St.
As many as 895 degrees and 208 certificates of achievement could go out during the ceremony. Eight students will be recognized with Superintendent Honors for completing at least 36 units with a 4.0 GPA, according to a news release.
In addition, 85 Merced College students are graduating with honors.
The Los Banos Campus plans to honor 100 of its graduates at the ceremony.
State Senator Anthony Cannella, representing the state’s 12th District, is on tap to deliver a commencement address titled “Tenacity.”
Leonel Farias, who is graduating with degrees in general agriculture and agriculture business, is also to deliver an address titled, “How Will Our Lives be Remembered?”
The ceremony will feature members of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, who will announce the Outstanding Professor of the Year Award. A special recognition is planned for graduates who are veterans of the armed forces.
