Two people suffered major injuries Wednesday when two vehicles crashed into a tree in Merced County, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Identities of the two people were not available.

The CHP responded around 2:30 p.m. to the area of Ballico Avenue and El Capitan Way to a report of a crash, Officer Scott McFarlane said. Few details were known Wednesday, including what may have caused the crash, the CHP said.

One person suffered pelvic injuries and cracked vertebrae, and the other received lower-abdomen injuries, according to the CHP website.

At least one of the victims was unconscious when emergency responders arrived, the CHP reported, and was taken by helicopter to a Modesto hospital. Updates on their conditions were not available Wednesday.

The two vehicles involved were a 2001 white Ford pickup truck and a 2008 Nissan sedan, McFarlane said.
