A 56-year-old Merced woman was beaten and robbed Wednesday evening, the Merced Police Department reported.
The woman, whose name was withheld for safety reasons, was walking in an alley in the 1600 block of R Street, near Main Street, when a man asked her for change, Lt. Andre Mathews said.
“When she told the man she did not have any change two other men approached and they all demanded that she give them her money,” Mathews said.
The men then struck the woman multiple times on her face and head and took her backpack and money, police said. The amount of cash taken was not released.
The victim may have been knocked unconscious during the incident. She suffered injuries to her eye and numerous facial cuts, police said.
Police described her injuries as “serious” but not life threatening. She was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Suspect descriptions were not available Thursday.
