Power failure in Merced

Some type of “equipment failure” Thursday afternoon left nearly 2,000 Merced residents without power for more than two hours, PG&E reported.

An equipment failure Thursday afternoon left nearly 2,000 Merced residents without power for more than two hours, Pacific Gas and Electric Co. reported.

The power interruption was reported at 2:08 p.m. and affected residents and businesses along Olive Avenue, between Highway 59 and M Street. Other affected areas included homes along Olivewood Drive, Rambler Road and Loughborough Drive, PG&E said.

Spokeswoman Katie Allen said 1,846 customers were without electricity.

The exact cause of the failure was not clear Wednesday, and utility crews attributed it to an unspecified equipment failure. The interruption came during one of the hottest periods of a reported 98-degree day.

Power was restored for most customers by 4 p.m., though about a dozen remained without electricity until around 5 p.m., authorities said.
