Fire scorches freeway landscaping

California Department of Transportation workers, the Merced County Fire Department and state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection firefighters work to suppress flames and smoke from a fire Thursday afternoon along southbound Highway 99 near the South Avenue exit in Delhi. Traffic was backed up as crews worked to keep the fire from spreading throughout freeway landscaping. Approximately an acre of the landscaping burned. The South Avenue exit was closed while crews fought the fire.
