Man hit by freight train, dies in Merced

A man died early Friday after he was struck by a train in Merced, the Merced County Coroner’s Office confirmed.
The victim’s identity was not known Friday, Merced County sheriff’s Deputy Delray Shelton said.
Deputies responded at 5:05 a.m. to the railroad tracks at Highway 59 and Santa Fe Avenue in Merced to investigate a report of a man who was struck by a freight train, Shelton said.
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.
How the man came to be on the railroad tracks was unclear and remained under investigation Friday evening.

Friday’s incident marked at least the third reported death since November in Merced County involving a train.
A 25-year-old Winton man died Jan. 18 after being struck by a train in an apparent suicide.
A man wearing headphones died Dec. 20, 2013, while walking on the tracks near Santa Fe Avenue near McKee and Keely roads.
A 32-year-old Winton man died Nov. 2, 2013, after he was hit by flying debris from a vehicle struck by a train on Olive Avenue, just south of Santa Fe Drive, authorities said.
