An Ahwahnee man wanted in connection with a suspected attempted murder and robbery in Coarsegold was captured Thursday in Washington state, the Madera County Sheriff’s Department reported.
Adrian Joseph Reyes, 29, was one of two men suspected of beating, robbing and shooting a 30-year-old man April 2 on Konklin Road, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Reyes was captured about 10 a.m. Thursday at a house in Richland, Wash., the Sheriff’s Department said in a news release.
The suspected co-conspirator, 20-year-old Robert Lee Huber of Oakhurst, was arrested in May in Las Vegas, spokeswoman Erica Stuart said in the release.
Both men are accused of taking more than $2,000 from a victim after mugging and shooting him after a long night of gambling and partying in Madera County, the Sheriff’s Department said.
Deputies said the victim was “gambling and partying” with a group of people that included Huber and Reyes. The victim won a large amount of cash gambling at a casino earlier in the evening, authorities said.
The group was headed to another party in the area of Bass Lake near North Fork when the victim asked the driver to pull over to the side of the road to relieve himself. The suspects “saw an opportunity” and attacked the victim, Stuart has said.
Deputies have previously described Huber as a known gang member and Reyes as a gang “associate.”
Reyes was captured with the help of a tip from the Crime Stoppers hotline, authorities said.
A witness spotted Reyes just before 10 a.m. leaving a house and getting into a vehicle, officials said.
Officers tried to pull him over, but he sped off, then pulled into the parking lot of a nearby high school, where he ditched the car. Reyes then led officers on a foot chase through the football stadium and a commercial district in the city. The chase ended when Reyes, “quite literally, ran straight into the arms of officers,” Stuart said in the release.
Reyes was taken to a Richland jail where he was booked on suspicion of felony evasion and obstruction. He remained jailed Friday awaiting extradition to Madera County.
