Dog obedience class

A beginning dog obedience class will start at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Applegate Park in Merced. The class teaches basic commands such as sit, down and stay, as well as walking on a loose leash. It is also a canine good citizen class, which will test a dog’s manners. The instructors have more than 20 years of experience training dogs. The six-week class costs $70, or $50 for dogs from a shelter or rescue organization. Call 631-0484 or email gwynmick@gmail.com.

Pasta fundraiser

There will be a drive-through pasta fundraiser to benefit 15-year-old cancer patient Kyle Begin from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Italo-American Lodge, 1351 W. 18th St. in Merced. Tickets are $10 for adults and $6 for children at the door.

New MS support group

A new multiple sclerosis support group will meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Merced County Library, 2100 O St. For more information, email Tabytha at purplecat79@yahoo.com or look for the group on Facebook.

Yosemite apple picking

Yosemite National Park will hold its annual apple-picking event from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdayin the Curry Village apple orchard. One tactic to reduce bear encounters is to remove non-native food sources from Yosemite Valley. There are two historic apple orchards in the valley that attract bears to areas used by visitors. Park visitors and volunteers are asked to help collect apples from the trees in this orchard.

Fun events at Kewl Kats

Kewl Kats has a variety of fun events throughout the week. Karaoke happens at 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 p.m. Friday DJ/dancing; 9 p.m. Saturday live music. Kewl Kats is at 1111 Motel Drive in Merced. For more information, call (209) 383-5395.

Arts Center exhibit

“Range: County Artists Across the Spectrum” runs from now through Sept. 19 at the Merced Multicultural Arts Center, at 645 W. Main St. in downtown Merced. The exhibit includes works by Natalie Porter, CHAA, the Enrichment Center and the 2014 Curator’s Award winners. For more information, visit artsmerced.org.

Atwater VFW To-Go Dinners

The Atwater VFW will sell barbecue pulled pork sandwiches to go from 4 p.m. to 7 Aug. 15 at 1390 Broadway Ave. Dinner includes the sandwich, sauce, beans, and coleslaw. All proceeds benefit veterans programs. For more information, call (209) 358-7224.

Merced Horsemen’s Reunion Dinner

Open Mic Night at the American Legion

Singers, musicians, poets, comedians and their friends are invited to gather from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 9 at the American Legion, 939 W. Main St. for Open Mic Night. Ten-minute or more blocks of time are available. A guitar amplifier, electronic keyboard and a PA system will be available. A karaoke player may also be available. All are welcome.
