An unidentified woman was killed just before 1 a.m. Thursday after her vehicle collided head-on with a pickup truck and burst into flames.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene on El Capitan Way, east of Ballico Avenue in Merced County, the California Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Investigators said the other person involved in the deadly wreck ran from the scene, leaving behind a 2004 Ford F-250 truck. Officer Moises Onsurez said the CHP was still searching for the other driver Thursday afternoon.

The CHP said the woman was heading west in a 2003 Ford Focus when her car drifted into the oncoming lane, striking the pickup head-on.

The victim was pronounced dead at 1:06 a.m., the CHP said.

A search of the area for the other driver with police dogs and aircraft was unsuccessful. A description of the suspect was not available.

Officers ask anyone with information to contact Officer Brian Carr at (209) 356-2969.

Gloria Wescott, 47, of Atwater was struck by a vehicle and died July 23 while walking on Santa Fe Drive near Business Parkway.

James Boykin, 29, also of Atwater was taken into custody in connection with the crash the following day.
