Sunrise Toastmasters Club

Newly formed nonprofit Winton Educational Foundation is seeking Winton residents and individuals to take part in its efforts to improve education of students, increase economic development and provide referral services to the community. The organization meets the first and third Thursday of the month. New Beginnings shelter
New Beginnings for Merced County Animals is a nonprofit dedicated to saving shelter animals and finding them new homes. The group needs volunteers, especially those who can care for kittens or dogs and their puppies for a short time. Help with photographing shelter animals is needed, as are people who can transport them to rescue organizations, for which no personal vehicles are needed. For more information, call (209) 769-2122.
Family Health Festival
Castle Family Health Centers will have its annual Family Health Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 9 at 3605 Hospital Road, Castle Commerce Center. There will be free health screenings for diabetes and blood pressure; vision, hearing and breast exams; and dental care for children. There also will be free lunch, entertainment, raffles and activities for children. Sports physicals will be available for $25, with $10 going back to the student’s school. Atwater VFW to-go dinners
The Atwater VFW will sell barbecue pulled pork sandwiches to go from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 15 at 1390 Broadway Ave. Dinner includes sandwich, sauce, beans and coleslaw. All proceeds benefit veterans programs. For more information, call (209) 358-7224.
Merced Horsemen reunion
The Merced Horsemen are scheduled to hold their third annual Reunion Dinner 5 p.m. Aug. 2 at 499 Nevada St. in Merced. The event will include Western music and cowboy poetry. Open Mic Night
Singers, musicians, poets, comedians and their friends are invited to gather from 6 to 9 p.m. Aug. 9 at the American Legion, 939 W. Main St., for Open Mic Night. Ten-minute or longer blocks of time are available. A guitar amplifier, electronic keyboard and a PA system will be available. A karaoke player may also be available. No need to be an American Legion member, just sign in at the front door. No cover. Cash prizes based on audience approval. Proceeds support veteran's programs.
