Central California Legal Services offers legal advice and representation to eligible people involved in tenant rights and homeless issues; Social Security and SSI disability claims; CalWorks, Medi-Cal, unemployment and CalFresh (food stamp) cases; and more. Atwater VFW to-go dinners
The Atwater chapter of Veterans of Foreign Wars will sell barbecue pulled pork sandwiches to go from 4 to 7 p.m. Aug. 15 at 1390 Broadway Ave. Dinner includes sandwich, sauce, beans and coleslaw. All proceeds benefit veterans programs. For more information, call (209) 358-7224.
New Beginnings shelter
New Beginnings for Merced County Animals is a nonprofit dedicated to saving shelter animals and finding them new homes. The group needs volunteers, especially those who can care for kittens or dogs and their puppies for a short time. Help with photographing shelter animals is needed, as are people who can transport them to rescue organizations, for which no personal vehicles are needed. For more information, call (209) 769-2122.
Family Health Festival
Castle Family Health Centers will hold its annual Family Health Festival from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 3605 Hospital Road, Castle Commerce Center. There will be free health screenings for diabetes and blood pressure; vision, hearing and breast exams; and dental care for children. There also will be free lunch, entertainment, raffles and children’s activities. Sports physicals will be available for $25, with $10 going back to the student’s school.
