A woman killed last week in a fiery hit-and-run collision has been identified as a 43-year-old Delhi resident.

Maria Gloria Lemus-Gonzales died about 1 a.m. Thursday when her vehicle collided head-on with a pickup truck and caught fire, the California Highway Patrol said.

The Merced County Coroner’s Office confirmed the victim’s identity after her family was notified of the incident.

She was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, at El Capitan Way, east of Ballico Avenue in Merced County, the CHP said.

Officers said Lemus-Gonzales was heading west in a 2003 Ford Focus when her car drifted into the oncoming lane, striking an on-coming 2004 Ford F-250 truck head-on.

The driver of the pickup truck abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene on foot, the CHP said.

Officer Moises Onsurez said the CHP was still searching for the other driver Monday. “We’re hoping someone from the public will reach out to us and provide information,” Onsurez said.

A description of the driver has not been released.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Officer Brian Carr at (209) 356-2969.
