Run or Dye, a colorful 5K in which runners are the canvases, is set to take place Saturday at Merced College.

Color runs are held across the nation, showering runners in multicolored plant-based cornstarch. The aim, according to organizers, is to promote fitness, friendship and fun.

Event manager Cory Hamilton said Merced residents sent requests through Facebook for a run to be held in the city. “We saw that people (in Merced) showed interest so we contacted the college and put this together,” Hamilton said.

About 1,500 people have registered for Saturday’s event, which is scheduled for the same day as Merced’s Run for the Fallen. Hamilton does not think attendance will be impacted.

“It won’t be an issue because (Run or Dye) is a couple hours after. People can actually do both,” he said. Hamilton said the date was set before organizers knew about Run for the Fallen.

The race will start promptly at 9 a.m. on campus. Participants will run through different color stations and, as soon as they cross the finish line, will find themselves in the middle of a color storm at the Finish Festival.

Organizers recommend that participants wear white so the colored cornstarch is more visible.

Residents interested in participating can sign up at Registration for individual adult runners is now $49. Registration for military members is $39 and children, ages 7 to 12, will pay $25. Participants can register on-site Saturday, but prices will be higher.
