A CalTrans employee from Modesto was struck and killed while working on Highway 99 this afternoon, authorities said.
The accident happened at 2:08 p.m. on the highway south of Victor Road, the Lodi News-Sentinel reported. Southbound traffic was disrupted as the California Highway Patrol investigated.
The victim was Donald Lichliter, 53. The governor's office said he was a tree maintenance leadworker assigned to special crews.
“Donald Lichliter was a devoted and hard-working public servant, who worked for Caltrans for over 27 years," Gov. Schwarzenegger said. "Maria and I join all Californians in expressing our appreciation for Donald’s service and we send our thoughts and prayers to his family and friends during this difficult time.”

In honor of Lichliter, Capitol flags will be flown at half-staff.
