For the second straight year, the top cyclists in the world will ride by Modesto Junior College, Graceada Park and city landmarks like the McHenry Mansion and McHenry Museum as part of the Modesto finish for the Tour of California’s fourth stage.
Amgen officials this morning gave specifics about the San Jose-to-Modesto route, one of eight stages in the Tour de France-style road race, which begins May 16 in Nevada City and ends May 23 in Thousand Oaks.
The San Jose-Modesto stage is set for May 19.
Local organizers lobbied for a finish that included multiple loops around downtown Modesto, and race officials complied.
Last year, the threat of inclement weather pushed the projected finish time beyond the window of television coverage, forcing officials to eliminate one of the two complete loops within the Modesto city limits.
This year, after winding their way through the back roads of Stanislaus County, they'll enter the city over the Needham overpass and turn left on College Avenue by MJC. They'll turn right on Coldwell Avenue, right on Sycamore Avenue by MJC and head to 16th street before making a right down I Street to 11th Street, one block past the finish line at 12th. They'll then turn right on 11th Street, left on Needham and back to College for two more circuits.
