A nonprofit group building a dog park in Newman has run out of time and money and given up.
Volunteers with Friends for Sophia's Dog Park had planted trees and installed fencing and some stairs and hurdles for a canine obstacle course, but couldn't keep up with weeds and overwatered the former home lot at 1269 Marapole Lane.
The work "has proved to be above and beyond both our expertise and abilities," the group's officials wrote in a letter to the city, whose leaders had donated the lot on condition that the city contribute nothing more.
On Tuesday, City Council members agreed to take back the land and asked staff for quotes on drains, sprinkler systems and grass. They made no decisions on whether to complete a dog park or switch to a regular park, or build courts for volleyball, bocce, shuffleboard, handball or badminton.
