Man injured in Atwater shooting

A 27-year-old man was injured after being shot Sunday evening near a residence in Atwater, police reported.

The incident was reported around 10:30 p.m. and the victim is expected to survive, according to Lt. Samuel Joseph.

The victim was a passenger in a green car driven by a 28-year-old man. The pair told police they were getting gas at a Valero Gas Station on Olive Avenue. The driver realized he’d forgotten his telephone, so the pair traveled back to a residence on Fifth Street, north of Atwater Boulevard.

As the men were driving back, they noticed a blue Honda Accord following them. The men pulled into the driveway of a residence, and the driver of the green car got out to retrieve his phone.

The blue Honda Accord pulled up in the driveway. At that time, a Latino male got out of the blue Honda, shouted obscenities and walked toward the 27-year-old man, who was seated in the passenger seat of the green car. The gunman then started firing.

The driver of the green vehicle got back into the car and tried to flee the area. The driver of the green car crashed into a into a parked vehicle. He then traveled to a Circle K store on Atwater Boulevard, where police were contacted.

The victim was flown to a Modesto hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Joseph said it’s unclear why the two men were fired upon. He said neither of the men had gang connections known to law enforcement.
