Livingston's United Methodist Church said it's taking orders for mochi (pounded rice) for New Year's.
Call the church office at (209) 394-2264 with your order to be sure you have some for the holiday.
Mochi tsuki will be held this year at the church, 11695 Olive Ave., Dec. 28 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Ordered mochi will be available for pickup after 1 p.m. Plain mochi is $3.50 a pound; ahn mochi, with the sweet bean paste inside, is $1 a piece.
Mochi tsuki is a Japanese tradition for New Year's. After cooking, the rice is pounded in granite bowls, then separated into small balls. Visitors are welcome to watch and participate in the process. Best time to come for viewing is from about 10 a.m. to noon, the church said in a news release.
Never miss a local story.
To get to the church, take the Hammatt exit from Highway 99, and go north on Hammatt. Take Hammatt to Olive and turn right. The church is down the road about a mile on the right.
