Disabled man who died in canal identified

The Merced County coroner’s office has identified Steven Casto, 50, of Los Banos, as last week’s drowning victim.

He died Oct. 2 after his wheelchair went into a canal on Center Avenue. Police pulled Casto out of the canal and attempted to revive him.

Casto was later pronounced dead at Memorial Hospital, Los Banos.

The Los Banos Police Department received a call from a woman at 2:50 a.m. reporting her 50-year-old husband missing.

The women said her husband was a quadriplegic who relied on an electric wheelchair.

She provided several business locations her husband would frequent, and said he used the canal walking path off Center Avenue to get home.

Officers searched the walking path on foot and located a male submerged in water strapped in his wheelchair.
