Three teens were taken into custody in connection with shoplifting at a convenience store and assault on a clerk, police said.

Cmdr. Ray Reyna Jr. said the Los Banos Police Department received a report of shoplifting at a convenience store in the 400 block of Mercey Springs Road at 4 p.m. Monday.

Three teens, males 18, 14 and 13, entered the store and reportedly tried to steal beer, Reyna said. He said the store clerk confronted the trio and was assaulted. Reyna said the clerk did not require medical attention.

The teens ran northbound on Mercey Springs Road as police arrived. Officer Sean Bayard caught up to one of the suspects, and officers Alfonso Flores and Chris Borchardt detained the other two teens.

Gustavo De Alba, 18, was placed under arrest on suspicion of commercial burglary, conspiracy to commit a crime and contributing to the delinquency of minors. De Alba is at the Merced County Jail pending $19,150 bail.

Police took the other two teens into custody, but it is unclear if they were sent to juvenile hall.
