A Los Banos man suffered major injuries Tuesday afternoon when his car veered into the path of a tanker truck on Highway 165 near Stevinson.

Luis Reis Avila, 77, was driving a Chevrolet Malibu south on the highway near Wolfsen Road when for unknown reasons he drove into northbound lanes, crashing into the front of a truck hauling milk, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Dean Emehiser.

The Chevrolet continued off the roadway and and overturned into a ditch west of the highway.

The accident, which occurred just after 1 p.m., closed Highway 165 between Highways 140 and 152 for more than 90 minutes.

Avila was taken by helicopter to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto. The 42-year-old driver of the milk tranker had minor injuries.

The cause of the collision remains under investigation, but Emehiser said drugs and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors.

A 26-year-old Newman man also suffered major injuries during a rollover accident that occurred Monday

According to the CHP, Marco Romero was driving a 2000 Pontiac Grand Am north on Eastin Road near Highway 33 at about 12:15 a.m. when the car left the road.

Romero lost control of the car, which rolled over several times before coming to rest on its side. Firefighters had to extricate him. He was taken to Memorial Medical Center.

Investigation into the accident continues. Authorities do not know why the car left the road; it is not clear whether drugs or alcohol were involved.
