An officer-involved shooting was reported in the Santa Nella area late Saturday night after a man tried to run over two California Highway Patrol officers, according to the Merced County Sheriff’s Department.
Neither of the officers was hurt. Although the incident involved CHP officers, the Sheriff’s Department has been asked to investigate the shooting, which is routine.
Details about the case remain preliminary.
Deputy Delray Shelton, sheriff’s spokesman, said the incident was reported just after 11:30 p.m. at the Valero gas station at 12845 Highway 33.
The officers were at the station and saw a man trying to steal beer from the business. The officers tried to stop the thief, who got into a silver 2003 Mitsubishi and fled.
A vehicle pursuit ensued in Santa Nella. At some point, the driver tried to run over the officers in the area of Monterey Court, Shelton said.
One of the officers discharged his firearm when the assailant tried to run them over. Shelton said it does not appear that anyone inside the suspect car was hit.
Deputies later recovered the Mitsubishi a short distance from the gas station, in a trailer park. The suspect remains at large.
Authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to call the sheriff’s office at (209) 385-7445. Tips are kept confidential and callers can remain anonymous.
