Fair an eye-opener on ‘darling downtown’

The Los Banos Downtown Spring Street Faire was held on April 12 and attracted hundreds.

Joan Adams was struck by one thing as she participated in the Downtown Spring Street Fair over the weekend.

“I didn’t know Los Banos had a downtown,” said the Prather resident. “It’s a darling downtown.”

The 56-year-old metal artist usually passes through Los Banos to attend large shows, but decided this year to set up at the one-day event. Sellers and buyers lined Main Street on Saturday morning, with more than 120 vendors reserving a spot.

“I thought it would be fun to do just a day show,” she said. “I’m always up for small shows.”

Adams uses rusted recycled material to create unique designs for the home and garden. Her display caught Los Banos residents Rick and Lori Winters’ eye and many others. The couple said they like to see handmade artwork, which is why they attend each year.

“(Lori) was raised here most of her life, so was our kids,” Rick Winters said. “So we try to support the community.”

Although there are already a few food booths and kids activities, the Winters suggested there be more. “To make it better,” he said, “how about a parade, maybe a little pony ride for the kids.”

Los Banos Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bertha Faria said the turnout was a success. “I’ve got nothing but positive reaction, not only from the vendors but from the attendees,” she said.

A second street fair is planned for the end of the year. For more information, call the Los Banos Chamber of Commerce at (209) 826-2495.
