A woman and child were killed early Saturday morning when the car in which they were riding crashed through a barbed-wire fence and into the Delta Mendota Canal, west of Los Banos.
The woman and the girl were passengers, along with 8-year-old Kira Wenzel, in a Mazda driven by Robert Rodela, according to the California Highway Patrol.
They were traveling east on Highway 152 about 5:45 a.m. when Rodela lost control of the car.
The Mazda left the right side of the road and struck the barbed-wire fence and a cement block, then continued into the Delta Mendota Canal, according to the CHP.
Rodela and Wenzel were able to get out of the car, but the 33-year-old woman and the girl were pronounced dead at the scene. It was unclear Monday if they drowned or died from injuries suffered in the collision.
Rodela suffered major injuries and was taken to Doctors Medical Center in Modesto, and Wenzel was taken to UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento with minor injuries.
The names of the deceased woman and child are being withed pending notification of family. The child’s age was not available. All four people who were in the Mazda are from San Jose.
The cause of the collision is under investigation, but drugs or alcohol do not appear to be a factor, according to the CHP.
