Monday was one of those days for the Los Banos Little League senior all-star team in a 16-5 loss to Turlock National in the opener of the District 73 tournament.
After Turlock went three up, three down in the top of the first inning, Los Banos put two on the board with RBI singles by Thomas Beebe and Jacob Lopez, but the lead was short-lived.
Turlock sent 15 batters to the plate during a 10-run second inning, with no outs until the 12th and 13th batters struck out. Ten straight batters reached base and scored by the time the dust settled.
“They hung their heads real early. That was the whole problem,” Los Banos coach Frank Lopez said. “But we’ve got a good group of kids, and they’re going to come back and battle. I’ve just got to get into their heads.”
Never miss a local story.
Turlock added four more in the third inning, with runs scoring on a Joel Contreras single, a hit batsman and a walk with the bases loaded and a Christian Flores sacrifice fly ball. Los Banos scored three in the bottom of the fourth, hoping to avoid a 10-run rule. Ricky Abejuela led off with a double, stole third and scored on a Jimmy Reyna groundout, then Daniel Martinez drove in two with a double over the left fielder.
Turlock made sure the 10-run rule went into effect with a two-run single by Garret Lema in the top of the fifth and a three-strikeout bottom of the frame.
“I’ll probably just go back to basics (this week),” Lopez said. “I don’t want this to be in the back of their mind, you know? Just clear their mind, let this go. Take the loss for what it is, and come back to battle another day. That’s it.
“We’ll be all right. We’ve got a good mixture of kids. The young guys came out that last inning and didn’t really give up any runs, just like two runs. So we’ll be all right.”
The seniors were back in action on Thursday (results were unavailable at press time) against Turlock American, which dropped its Tuesday game to Turlock National 10-0.
