A man in a stolen bread delivery truck led Los Banos police on a low-speed chase through downtown early Friday afternoon before surrendering to law enforcement at a gas station.
According to Cmdr. Ray Reyna of the Los Banos Police department, Jesse Cortinas, 55, of Mountain View, was driving a bread-delivery truck and collided with a city vehicle in the area of Sixth and I streets. When Cortinas kept going, the city worker followed and tried to stop him while also calling the police.
The truck was later determined to have been stolen from the Mountain View area.
“Our officer caught up with him at Seventh and J, attemped to stop him with emergency lights and sirens,” Reyna said. “He failed to yield and continued at slow speeds through the downtown area, made his way to California and onto Pacheco Avenue.”
The truck stayed on Pacheco for only a block before pulling into a gas station at Pacheco and Nevada avenues.
Reyna said between the time Cortinas hit the city vehicle and police caught up with him during a busy downtown lunch hour, he hit another vehicle with the truck on 500 block of J Street, causing minor damage.
“Thankfully no one was injured,” Reyna said. “That’s a big vehicle.”
After stopping in the parking lot, Cortinas put his hand in the air but would not exit. He was forced out by officers and placed under arrest, then transported to Memorial Hospital, Los Banos for treatment of lacerations on his hands and other health issues, according to Reyna.
Reyna said Cortinas will be charged with possession of a stolen vehicle and failure to yield to an emergency vehicle.
