Three people were hurt in a two-vehicle crash Monday on Highway 152 at Palm Avenue in the Los Banos area, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The crash was reported at 10:20 p.m. after Urbano B. Munoz, 24, of Los Banos was driving a 2006 Chevy Impala northbound on Palm Avenue, south of Highway 152 at about 65 to 70 mph. Brian Shiver, 53, of Mendota was a passenger in the Impala.
Meanwhile, Silvestre Guadarrama, 54, of Merced, was driving a big rig with a trailer attached eastbound on Highway 152, west of Palm Avenue, at about 55 mph.
Munoz came upon the intersection of Highway 152 and Palm Avenue and failed to halt at a stop sign, according to CHP.
Munoz drove into the big rig’s path and was broadsided. The impact caused the big rig to travel in a northeasterly direction and onto the median, where it came to a stop on its right side. The trailer landed on its right side, causing a load of melons it was carrying to spill onto the dirt median.
The Impala traveled in a northeasterly direction onto the median, where it came to a stop on its wheels. The driver of the Impala suffered major head injuries and was flown to a Modesto hospital. The passenger of the Impala also suffered major injuries and was flown to a Modesto hospital.
The driver of the big rig suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced.
CHP said the crash remains under investigation.
