Police said a Merced man was driving under the influence when he crashed this week, injuring himself and others, police said on Friday.
Robert Maule, 34, of Merced was driving north on Glen Avenue about 5:30 p.m. on Thursday near Robinson Drive, police said. He was driving at "a high rate of speed" when he lost control of his 1998 Chevrolet truck, careening into a tree, according to officers.
The truck came to rest near East South Bear Creek Drive and Glen Avenue. When police arrived, Maule and a passenger were lying on the ground outside of the truck, officers said, and a third person was pinned inside.
A Merced City Fire Department crew helped the third person get out of the truck. Maule and the passengers were all transported to area hospitals for their injuries, police said.

Maule was placed under arrest after he was released from the hospital, police said, on suspicion of driving under the influence causing bodily injury. He remains in custody in lieu of $100,000 bail, according to jail records.
Police did not have updates Friday on the condition of the passengers.
