No injuries were reported during a robbery late Monday evening at a Mexican restaurant near 16th and M streets, police said Tuesday.

The robbery happened about 10 p.m. at Fiesta Mexicana, 530 W. 16th St., according to Lt. Bimley West. Two men entered through a back door, one of them brandishing a handgun.

The men demanded cash, but initially the employee thought it was a joke. The gunman then fired his gun, striking a computer, West said.

The employee then handed over cash from the register. When the robbers demanded more money, West said, the employee emptied the register.

The robbers then fled.

West said responding officers were delayed by a passing train. Police surrounded the area upon arrival, but were unable to locate the robbers, West said.

Witnesses said the men wore hooded sweat shirts. One was wearing dark clothes, was about 5 feet 8 inches tall and weighed about 170 pounds. The other robber was wearing light-colored clothes. Both reportedly were in their early 20s.

Police are asking anyone with information about the robbers to call (209) 385-4702 or the department's tipline at (209) 385-4725. The public can send information via anonymous text messages to the Police Department by dialing "TIP411" (847411) and including the word "ComVIP" as the keyword in the text message.
