A routine police patrol Monday morning ended with a wanted man behind bars, after a foot chase through Merced.

Jerome Winn, 21, was booked at the Merced County Main Jail on a warrant charging him with unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor more than three years younger, battery, child endangerment, two vehicle code violations and a fresh count of suspicion of resisting police, according to booking records.

Merced police spotted Winn about 10:30 a.m. walking in the 200 block of West 19th Street, Lt. Andre Matthews said.

“They recognized him as having a warrant and he (Winn) took off on them,” Matthews said.

Police said Winn darted in and out of alleys, jumped over several fences and briefly ran through the backyards of residential neighborhoods.

Officers surrounded the area looking for a shirtless man wearing red pajama bottoms and set a perimeter, Mathews said.

Winn tried to escape by doubling back on the officers, but he was apprehended near where police initially spotted him in the 200 block of West 19th Street, police said.

No injuries were reported.

Winn was still in custody Monday evening in lieu of $116,000 bail.
