A 29-year-old Planada man was slashed in the face by a man with a knife Friday afternoon at a market on Sutter Street, the Merced County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
The victim got into an argument with the other man just after 1 p.m. at the Mercado Latino market, also known as Lute’s Market, at 318 Sutter St. in Planada, Undersheriff Jason Goins said.
“The suspect challenged the victim to a fight and the victim was turning to walk away,” Goins said.
He said the attacker, described only as a man in his 40s, then pulled a pocketknife with a 3-inch folding blade and slashed the victim’s chin. The victim suffered a 3-inch laceration and was treated at the scene, deputies said.
The injury was not life-threatening, authorities confirmed.
Exactly what prompted the violence remained unclear.
Investigators were searching for the attacker Friday afternoon. “We have (a suspect) identified and know he was driving a white Dodge pickup,” Goins said.
