Hundreds of prospective students and their parents turned out Saturday at UC Merced for Preview Day.
The day is geared toward giving possible applicants a chance to see the campus for themselves, ask questions of faculty and staff, attend presentations and workshops, and learn about campus life. Turning out for the event were 622 prospective students and their parents, which was about 120 more people than attended last year, according to Alex Delgadillo, UC Merced associate director of admissions.
Some families traveled from as far as San Diego to attend the event, Delgadillo said, as more young people are hearing about the campus from those who’ve graduated from the school. “Now we’ve placed ourselves on the map not only because of our research, but because students are having a positive experience and they’re sharing that with students back home,” he said.
Staff members helped prospective students with information about financial aid, campus housing, scholarships, majors, fraternities and sororities.
Campus officials are aiming to increase student enrollment to about 6,500 during the fall 2014 semester. The campus’ current enrollment is about 6,195 students.
