UC Merced Magazine hopes to catch the Central Valley’s eye

UC Merced has launched a semiannual magazine meant to educate the greater Central Valley about the university’s level of research. About 20,000 copies of UC Merced Magazine have been mailed to households and other locations in the Sacramento, Modesto and Fresno areas, according to senior public information representative Lorena Anderson.

The idea is to get elected officials or potential students and their parents to think about the campus, she said. The school could be a source for those looking at college, but also for policymakers who are looking for experts before they make any decisions.

“We would like people to take a look at our research and consider us,” Anderson said.

The inaugural magazine features articles that highlight research related to fire and water issues in California’s changing climate, the engineering of unmanned drones, cognitive science and other areas of study.

Research has a large role on the growing campus.

UC Merced’s enrollment grew by 7 percent this year to a total of 6,195 students on the 8-year-old campus, according to fall census numbers. More than half of undergraduates are majoring in science, technology, engineering or math, areas of study that include a research component.

The humanities also receive some attention from the magazine, which lists a number of books written in the last year by university staff.

Anderson, who serves as the magazine’s editor, said she hopes readers will see the school’s “stellar” faculty, and that the university’s research encompasses serious issues faced by the region.

“We’re just really proud of our campus,” she said. “We want people to see that we’re more than just the newest UC campus.”
