UC Merced plans an open house Saturday aimed at introducing the campus to prospective students or anybody else interested in the university.
Bobcat Day is about 10 hours of workshops, tours and mingling for past, current and prospective students. It starts at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Scholars Lane and Ansel Adams Road on the 5200 North Lake Road campus.
“The primary audience are any students who have been admitted and their families, but it’s definitely a great time to come out and see the campus,” said Brenda Ortiz, a spokeswoman for UC Merced.
Guided tours of the campus begin every 30 minutes and continue throughout the day, she said.
Never miss a local story.
The grassy quad in front of the university library will be home to campus clubs and organizations for much of the day, according to the schedule of events. Ortiz said admitted and prospective students can get to know what the campus offers.
She said the clubs make the event fun. For example, engineering students often use their science knowledge to make ice cream for visitors.
The Student Alumni Association plans time for alumni to speak with admitted and prospective students about their experience in the city of Merced. The association will take suggestions about what new students would like to see in town. That chat starts at 11 a.m. in the Classroom and Office Building.
A reunion for the university’s “founding classes” is one highlight of the day, and the first reunion held on Bobcat Day, said Heather Wilensky, alumni relations director. The founding classes include graduates from 2006-2009.
“It made perfect sense to us to invite our alumni back to celebrate not only their accomplishments since they graduated but also the growth and beauty of our campus,” she said.
The reunion is planned from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Wallace-Dutra Amphitheater. It will be the first official event at the now-complete venue, which has room for about 2,000 and sits next to Little Lake.
Another sight to see at UC Merced is the Bobcat Art Show, which highlights work by student artists. The gallery, found in the Social Sciences and Management Building, is open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Other workshops covering life on campus and a trivia game complete with prizes are planned. A list of all of the day’s events is available at alumni.ucmerced.edu/bobcatday.
