MERCED -- John Sykes has had more memorable starts.
The Golden Valley senior missed back-to-back dunks in the first two minutes of Wednesday's game .
He was whistled for a charge seconds later and eventually found himself on the bench with a leg injury.
"Oh, that was nothing," Sykes said with a sly grin. "I was just getting warmed up."
Was he ever.
The 6-foot-5-inch point guard threw down a vicious one-handed slam, elevating over Roosevelt's Javontae Johnson to put the exclamation point on Golden Valley's season-opening victory.
Sykes finished with just six points in limited minutes, and Alex Fletcher led four players in double figures with 14 points in an 80-50 win at Cougar Arena.
Scott Livesay, Donte Scott and Richard Thomas had 10 points each as Golden Valley (1-0) opened the game on 29-6 run.
"I love the energy," Golden Valley coach Keith Hunter said. "And we shot great. It's always nice when the shots are going down.
"That's our game. That's what we do. We've got some really good shooters on this team and they have to make their shots."
MANTECA 62, MOUNT DIABLO 39, at Concord Tournament -- The Buffaloes (1-0) took care of the ball in the second half and used a 22-point third quarter to pull away. Kiwi Gardner led Manteca with 17 points.
ESCALON LIONS CLUB TOURNAMENT, at Escalon -- Monica Jamero hit two 3-pointers in the last two minutes of the fourth quarter to put Denair ahead for the first time all game, and the Coyotes went on to defeat host Escalon in the first round of the Escalon Lions Club Tournament.

Ayuana Palmore (11 points) joined Laura Lopez (12) as the only Downey players to reach double figures in a 45-29 loss to Redwood Christian.
Argonaut, led by Lauren Godde's 20-point performance, rolled past Millennium 58-4.
EAST UNION 70, HIRAM JOHNSON 29, at Sacramento -- Rachel McDaniel scored 26 points, and the Lancers (3-0) opened with a 23-5 first quarter en route to a rout of the Warriors.
MODESTO CHRISTIAN 54, WINDWARD 33, at La Jolla -- For the first time in five years, the Crusaders won their opening game at the La Jolla Country Day Tournament. Lauren Lucchesi led Modesto Christian (1-0) with 13 points.
WESTON RANCH 68, FRANKLIN 39, at Stockton -- The Cougars, led by sophomore Timnesha Wilson's 17 points, cruised to a win over the visiting Yellowjackets and improved to 4-0.
SANTA CRUZ 77, CERES 30, at Mills Tournament in Millbrae -- Jamie Beck scored 11 to lead the Bulldogs (0-2).
TURLOCK 41, EL DIAMANTE 36, at Selma -- The Bulldogs (2-0) missed 12 of their first 16 shots, but scratched out a victory behind a team-high 10 points from Camille Roberts.
PITMAN 40, BEYER 38, at Beyer -- Wins by three brothers couldn't help the Patriots defeat the Pride. Sophomore Jake Congleton got things started with a victory in the 112-pound match, freshman Ford won in the 125s, and senior Oliver Congleton (145) prevailed to close out the family affair.
