Broadway continues to beckon Oakdale native Colleen Hawks, who undoubtedly is happy to answer.
Hawks is performing in her third show on Broadway, playing the fairy godmother and the bluebird in "Shrek the Musical."
The show, which opened in December, is based on the 2001 Oscar-winning film about an ogre who rescues a fairy princess. Hawks replaces the previous actress in the fairy godmother role.
Hawks' past Broadway credits include the musicals "The Boy from Oz" (2003-04) with Hugh Jackman and "Smokey Joe's Cafe" (1999).
Hawks was planning to come home this month to star in the upcoming Modesto Performing Arts production of "Crazy for You," opening Aug. 23 at Modesto High School, but she got the "Shrek" role at the last minute, MPA founding director Paul Tischer said.
Local audiences might remember Hawks from a previous Modesto Performing Arts production, a staging of "Oklahoma!" in 2002. Her co-star in that show, Jeff Pierce, eventually became her husband.
Hawks also is a former California Junior Miss and Miss Stanislaus County.
