[UPDATE - 12:30 p.m.] The Stanislaus County sheriff's department said today that the person shot to death in an unincorporated area of Modesto on Tuesday evening was a 16-year-old boy, and that another 16-year-old boy has been taken into custody as a suspect in the killing.
The suspect is being held at Juvenile Hall on charges of murder and assault with a deadly weapon, a sheriff's statement said.

The sheriff's statement also said that a 29-year-old man was also a victim and was treated at a hospital for injuries not considered life-threatening.
The sheriff's office did not release the identities of the victims or the alleged killer.
Gunfire erupted Tuesday evening, leaving one person dead after a shooting in an unincorporated Modesto neighborhood just east of Ninth Street and south of the Tuolumne River.
The male victim was taken to a Modesto hospital after the shooting occurred, but he was not taken by an ambulance, said Deputy Andrew Winter, a spokesman for the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department.
He said investigators were trying to determine who took the victim to the hospital.
The victim's age and city of residence were not available. Winter said investigators did not know if others were hit by gunfire.
The shooting occurred about 5:45 p.m. on Lombardo Avenue between Anthony and Romeo avenues. One neighbor said he heard several shots.
Investigators Tuesday night were trying to determine exactly where the shooting occurred, Winter said. Deputies cordoned off the block and a nearby alley while investigators canvassed the neighborhood in search of witnesses.
A car was found nearby with most of its windows shattered, but Winter said investigators did not know if the car was hit by gunfire.
Investigators did not have a description of the suspect or suspects involved in the shooting. Winter said it was unclear whether the shooting was a drive-by, and it was too early to determine whether the shooting was gang-related.
Tuesday's fatal shooting was the second this month in Modesto, but the incidents are not linked. Ramon Rivera Villanueva, 26, from the Los Angeles area, was shot and found dead Oct. 10 in the 900 block of Sutter Avenue in west Modesto.
