A 21-year-old Turlock woman died early Sunday and two other people suffered major injuries in a Highway 99 wreck in Fresno, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The patrol said the Turlock woman, identified by the Fresno County coroner as Guadalupe Regalado, 21, was riding in a 2002 Ford Mustang driven by Christine Naranjo, 23, of Delhi.
Naranjo's car was northbound in the slow lane about 2:45 a.m. when she lost control and crashed into the center divider, stopping in the fast lane, the CHP reported.
Officers said they believe Naranjo and one passenger got out of the car before it was hit by another northbound car. Naranjo's car spun around and came to rest in the center lane.
The three remaining passengers, all in the rear seat, then got out. Naranjo's car and Regalado were then struck by a tractor-trailer.
Two of Naranjo's passengers suffered major injuries. They were identified as Lelianna Apodaca, 19, and Crystal Andrade, 18, whose hometowns were not known. A third passenger, identified as Ariceli Regalado, unknown age, of Turlock, had minor injuries.
They were taken to Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno.
The wreck closed Highway 99's northbound lanes at Clinton Avenue for several hours. Traffic was detoured around the wreck.
