Survivors of a young man killed while driving in a baffling daytime homicide have established a fund in his memory, a family member said.
Amadeo Avalos, 20, had professional soccer aspirations and considered a law enforcement career as well, his family said.
Loved ones were shocked when gunfire ended his life Monday morning as he drove a pickup to have it checked by a mechanic in Ceres, they said.
No arrests have been made and an investigation is ongoing, said Ceres police Sgt. Jose Berber.
Avalos had recently returned from his uncle's burial in Tijuana, a family member said.
Donations may be made at any Bank of America branch to the Amadeo Avalos Memorial Fund.
Investigators ask anyone with information about the shooting to call the Ceres Police Department at 538-5627 or Crime Stoppers at 521-4636. Tipsters can e-mail tips through the Crime Stoppers Web site, www.modestopolice.com/CrimeStoppers, or text tips to CRIMES (274637) by typing "Tip704" and a message. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and are eligible for a cash reward.
